The farm-based economy in Bhidabari, Machapuchare Rural Municipality is growing. Increasing productivity, employment, and income are becoming prime agenda for women micro-entrepreneurs also, who are seeking economic careers in agri based enterprises. Women are uniting through dairy cooperative society to build up sustainable income sources and maintain farm ecosystem. The cooperative is owned by the majority of women members, which produces milk and sells it in the nearby market through collection center.


There are also small and unorganized farm level practices for dairy production in the area. Mrs. Harimaya Bhandari is a dairy producer. She is producing cottage cheese, raw butter, and curds as main dairy products. The farm is registered to carry out business of purchase and sale of seeds as well as veterinary medicine specially concerned with the prevention, control, diagnosis, and treatment of diseases affecting the health of cattle and livestock.


Nevertheless, the registration certificate does not comprise the production of the dairy product as its business. The Pokhara Municiaplity returned its cottage cheese because its packaging did not mention the manufacturing and expiry date. It also did not contain any business logo. However, the municipality now accepts the cottage cheese because it is coming in an upgraded package with the polythene/plastic wrap well sealed with hot punching machine.


The package still does not contain any label that descries its origin, manufacturing and/or expiry date. The average daily production is 3-5 kg of cottage cheese. One kilogram of cottage cheese sells at rupees 900 in retail market. Mrs. Harimaya Bhandari does not have knowledge that she is risking her business by not fully complying with local laws. The local government and the regulating authority must provide an awareness training as to regularization of farm-based practices to remain compliant with local laws at all times.
